How much does a locksmith cost in Brisbane? What you should (and shouldn't) pay

The short answer

At LockOps, prices start from $125 for a home lockout, $60 to rekey a front door, $165 for a lock replacement and $205 for a new lock installation, including the $45 callout, at any hour of the day. The final price depends on the lock, its security level and what the job needs, and the technician confirms it with you before starting.

How locksmith pricing actually works

Nearly every locksmith bill has three parts, whether or not they're shown separately:

1. Callout fee — covers the drive, the van, the tools and the licensed technician's time to get to you. Charged once per visit.
2. The job — opening the door, rekeying the cylinder, swapping the lock. This is the labour and skill.
3. Parts — a new cylinder, a new lock body, keys cut. Only applies when something is actually replaced.

Honest operators tell you the first two on the phone and the third once they've seen the door. The bait-and-switch operators advertise only the first, at a number designed to be the lowest in the search results, and decide the other two when you're standing on the footpath at midnight.

Brisbane locksmith starting prices, job by job

The table below shows LockOps' published starting prices and the things that can legitimately push a job above them. All figures include GST.

Note the "from". A starting price is the minimum for a standard job on standard hardware. Restricted keys, high-security cylinders, commercial doors or frame damage after a break-in can legitimately push it higher — the test of a good locksmith is whether they explain that before starting, not after.

What legitimately changes the price

• Lock type. A standard knob or deadlatch is quick. Restricted, high-security or commercial-grade hardware takes longer and costs more in parts.
• Number of cylinders. Rekeying is priced per cylinder. Front, back, garage and screen door adds up — ask for the total, not the per-unit rate.
• Damage. If the door or frame has been forced, there may be carpentry beyond the lock itself. This should be quoted as a separate item.
• Keys. Extra keys cut on site are usually a few dollars each for standard profiles, considerably more for restricted or car keys.

What shouldn't change it

Traffic. Parking. Distance within the locksmith's advertised service area. How busy they are. How stressed you sound. And, for a locksmith worth using, the time of day. Some operators add 50–100% for nights, weekends and public holidays and disclose it only on the invoice. Ask before you book: "Is your price the same after hours?" A clear yes or no tells you a lot about how the rest of the conversation will go. (LockOps' answer is yes — the $45 callout and every starting price above are the same 24/7.)

Six red flags before you say yes

1. A callout fee under $30 in a sponsored ad. Nobody drives a licensed technician across Brisbane for $19. The rest of the bill is coming.
2. No starting price on the phone. "We'll see when we get there" is not an answer for a standard job.
3. No licence number. Queensland requires a Security Provider Licence. If they can't give you one, hang up. You can check any number on the Queensland Government register.
4. Drilling first. Almost every residential lock can be opened non-destructively. A locksmith who reaches for the drill straight away is creating a lock sale.
5. Cash only, or payment before the work. Legitimate operators take card on completion.
6. A national 1300/1800 number with no local address. Often a call centre that dispatches to whoever is nearest, at whatever they charge. Local Brisbane numbers (07) and a named business are a better sign.

What to ask on the phone (60 seconds)

You don't need to be an expert. Four questions sort most locksmiths:

1. "What's your callout fee, and what does it cover?"
2. "For a standard [lockout / rekey / lock change], what's your starting price, and what would make it higher?"
3. "Is that the same price at this time of day?"
4. "What's your licence number?"

Then, when the technician arrives, confirm the total before they touch anything. A good locksmith will do this without being asked. If it's above the starting price you were given, ask why — a real reason sounds like "this is a restricted cylinder, not a standard one", not "it's just more complicated".
